The Crassulaceae family, known commonly as stonecrops or orpine, includes a wide variety of succulent plants. Here's how to care for them:
- Light
- Sunlight: succulents thrive in bright, indirect sunlight. Aim for 6-8 hours of light per day. Avoid harsh, direct midday sun, which can cause leaf burn.
- Water
- Watering: Water infrequently but thoroughly. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot. Reduce watering during the winter months when the plants are dormant.
- Soil
- Use a well-draining soil mix designed for succulents and cacti. A mixture of regular potting soil, coarse sand, and perlite or pumice works well.
- Temperature
- Ideal temperatures range between 60-80°F (15-27°C). While some Crassulaceae succulents can tolerate lower temperatures, they should be protected from frost.
- Humidity
- These plants prefer low humidity levels. High humidity can increase the risk of fungal diseases and pest infestations.
- Fertilizer
- Fertilizing: Fertilize sparingly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, diluted fertilizer. Over-fertilizing can damage the plants.
- Potting
- Potting and Repotting: Ensure pots have drainage holes to prevent waterlogging. Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant has outgrown its pot.
- Pests
- Pests: Common pests include mealybugs, aphids, and spider mites. Regularly inspect your plants and treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
By following these care guidelines, Crassulaceae succulents will remain healthy and vibrant.
